Several regions of Kazakhstan are recognized as free zones from foot and mouth disease
By the decision of the International Epizootic Bureau, Almaty, Zhambyl, South Kazakhstan, Kyzylorda and East Kazakhstan regions received the status free from foot and mouth disease. This was announced today during a press conference in the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
"An agreement on a program of cooperation in veterinary medicine was signed between the government of Kazakhstan and the international epizootic bureau (OIE). As a result of the work on the prevention of foot and mouth disease, strict compliance with the FMD control strategy in accordance with international requirements, on May 25, 2017 in Paris, an official ceremony of handing out a certificate of conferring to Kazakhstan the status of a zone free from foot and mouth disease was held. At the meeting of the General Assembly, OIE delegates from 180 countries of the world unanimously voted to get Kazakhstan the status of a zone free from foot and mouth disease", - said Vice Minister of Agriculture Kayrat Aytuganov.
Obtaining the status of a country free from foot and mouth disease allows Kazakhstan to export products of animal and vegetable origin to WTO member countries, it will allow to realize the export potential of our agro-industrial complex, and also positively affect the economic development and image of Kazakhstan.
"Most of the meat processing plants and feedlot sites are located in the southern regions, including EKR. For example, the Union of Sheep-breeders of Kazakhstan includes 48 enterprises, 40 of them are located in these five regions. They are ready to work for export for a long time, now they will be able to realize their export potential. The experts of NCE also added that Israel, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and China are ready to take meat products of these regions. However, it is now necessary to take into account the fact of unscrupulous suppliers, which can cast doubt on the products of these regions.

Foot and mouth disease is a listed disease of the OIE, which is characterized by high contagiousness, the presence of several types, subtypes of the pathogen, has a wide range of susceptible animal species, multifaceted transmission routes. In this regard, at the international level, for export and import, the obligatory condition is the existence of a status of a safe area for foot and mouth disease.
Earlier, Kazakhstan received the status of a zone free from foot and mouth disease without vaccination for 9 regions (2015), and approval of the National FMD Control Program (2016), a country free from African horse sickness (2016). All these statuses have been successfully reaffirmed by the OIE Scientific Commission this year.
