How to make money on the Universiade-2017

Head of the Global Fund "Directorate for preparation and holding of the 28th World Winter Universiade in 2017 in Almaty” Nail Nurov in an exclusive interview to palata.kz invited local companies to cooperate and told about some features of the business.

- Nail Faridovich you informed at a briefing at the Service of Central Communications, that percentage of local content in the Universiade venues is about 60%. Can you say more precisely in the provision of what services for the preparation and holding of the Universiade can Kazakh enterprise earn or have earned money?

- First of al, 60% - this is today’s indicator. And it covers the construction of facilities, supply of textile products and catering services. Imports amount mostly to sports equipment, which, of course, must be licensed. Unfortunately, we do not produce it.

- What do you think about the geography of the contractors? Among them prevail companies from Almaty, or regional companies also sign contracts?

- Today we are just waiting for bidding, we announced it, applications come in very large number, we got a lot of calls, many companies see themselves, they want to participate in it. We only welcome it. The only thing we ask business to understand that the Universiade is not the place to start business, it is not time for some adventurous things. We call on the business to be very responsible.

- What can you say about the quality of the services, which have already been provided by the companies? It is not enough to win the tender, it is important to fulfill all the requirements of procurement managers. Therefore, it is curious how the Directorate evaluates it?

- Today we are actively looking for potential suppliers, and we are trying to do it, and I used the platform of the Service of the Central Communications to invite Kazakhstani business, major companies to cooperate. Often, we appeal to businessmen, telling them that we have announced a tender for tailoring, after a while we invite them and ask: did you apply? and they tell us: "What for? You have already decided everything". Nobody has decided anything, participate in tenders, win in fair competition. The law "On state purchases" is now loyal to suppliers. Our task is just to create incentives to ensure that all serious companies cooperate with us.

- At the briefing, you also said that after the sequester of the budget nearly two times for the preparation for the Universiade, now it stands at 17 billion tenge. Did this circumstance affect the amount of the contracts and profit, which was expected by the potential suppliers of the Universiade? In what areas of expenditure did you save?

- We saved on the preparations for the opening ceremony of the Universiade, the cultural program, the torch relay, the international PR and advertising. In other words, we have saved on the surroundings. We did not save on the things that directly affect the conduct and organization of sporting events. You are absolutely right, business will not make super-profits on our project, it is a tough competition. For example, we announced tenders for transport services. The companies call us and say: "It is impossible to make profit". We say: "Just maybe, you're not used to that level of profitability, perhaps you just got used to the crazy margins, and you think it is not enough. We say that we will not add, all calculations have been done by experts".
